This year's grant request for the Elementary Art program included wooden looms, weaving supplies, and picture books about the process and art of weaving. Exposure to this skill reinforces pattern, self-expression and fine-motor skills. Weaving is an important foundational skill for sculpture, fiber art, collage, and more. It's also fun and engaging for all abilities!
With the resources provided by the Foundation this year, Mrs. Guasco's first through third grade students have practiced weaving and incorporated it into their artwork. First graders worked on the new collaborative loom to create a "mystery picture" then used their weaving skills on an apple basket still life collage. Second graders turned their weaving into a city-scape. Third graders tried fiber art and were able to weave using recycled CDs as looms.
